Hispanic Engineer magazine is preparing to celebrate its 40th anniversary, marking several milestones. Since its debut, the magazine has revolutionized access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers by promoting the dreams, aspirations, and significant contributions of often hidden talent.

In the Editor’s Page of Hispanic Engineer‘s spring 1999 issue, the late Carmela Castaneda Mellado celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) as she looked to SHPE’s legacy for tomorrow. Click here to read the archive magazine.

She expressed the vital role of organizations in helping students realize their academic and career potential and saluted SHPE for successfully carrying out this mission for 25 years.

The cover of the landmark issue featured four consequential leaders: Serafin Fernandez, president of SHPE from 1997-1999; Melissa Villegas Drake, SHPE president from 1995-1997; Raul Alvarado Jr, SHPE president from 1977-1980; and Rodrigo T. Garcia, SHPE founding president from 1974-1976, who had first appeared on the cover of Hispanic Engineer magazine’s “Government and Defense Issue” in 1987.

In 2019, Rodrigo “Rod” Garcia, co-founder of SHPE, was interviewed for Hispanic Engineer magazine’s “Hispanic Heritage Month” edition, where he shared anecdotes about SHPE’s founding and its enduring legacy in celebrating Hispanic engineers’ contributions, emphasizing the opportunities for a new generation of Hispanic professionals.

In the summer of 2022, SHPE announced the passing of their co-founder, Rod Garcia, who died on July 2, 2022, surrounded by family and friends.

The email to the SHPE Familia contained glowing tributes to Garcia, acknowledging his impact on the nation and his commitment to Hispanics in STEM.

SHPE expressed deep gratitude for Garcia’s exceptional mind, endless compassion, and commitment to Hispanics in STEM, with his legacy now over five decades long and impacting over 13,000 individuals annually.

In recognition of SHPE’s 50th anniversary year, Hispanic Engineer magazine joins the community as they celebrate the ongoing impact of the organization in empowering Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx individuals through awareness, access, support, and development, highlighting Garcia’s significant role in SHPE’s history and lasting influence.
