Thoughts and prayers are not enough, but hearts are with Puerto Rico. Since Dec. 28, the island has been ravaged by earthquakes. Tremors have destroyed or damaged hundreds of structures in the last two weeks, forcing thousands to flee.
According to news reports, Latino Leadership, Inc. is reinstating the emergency response program it used after Hurricane Maria. The organization reportedly helped Puerto Rican families relocate to Central Florida after disasters hit.
Two years ago, Hispanic Engineer magazine wrote about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ work delivering critical materials. After Hurricane Maria, the Corps received a list from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority with requirements based on damage assessments.
In January 2018, the Task Force Power Restoration opened two additional warehouse and laydown yard distribution points to help speed restoration work. The sites in Bayamon and Palo Seco were built to reduce the amount of time that work crews spent picking up and delivering materials across the island.
During the next several weeks, the Corps of Engineers expanded the warehouses and laydown yards to seven, to include Ponce, Puerto Rico.
