The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 and covers the northern Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico.
Forecasters at the NOAA National Weather Service are predicting above-normal hurricane activity for the 2024 season in the Atlantic basin, with expectations of 17 to 25 named storms, 8 to 13 hurricanes, and 4 to 7 major hurricanes.
This prediction is based on factors such as warm ocean temperatures and La Nina conditions.
The University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) recently received a $500,000 grant for the “Listening to Puerto Rico” digital humanities project.
This project stems from the “Mi María: Puerto Rico after the Hurricane” public humanities project, which involved over 100 undergraduate students from UPRM recording oral histories about Hurricane María and its aftermath.
“Listening to Puerto Rico” focuses on capturing and sharing stories about Puerto Rico’s recent challenges.
It began in the January 2022 semester and was offered online by the English Department and the Film Certificate, open to students from any UPR campus and the general public.
The award brought together three UPRM programs—the Department of English, General Library, and Film Certificate—to establish a digital and physical Oral History Lab.
The Lab, a unique and innovative multidisciplinary space, is dedicated to recording and sharing stories about Puerto Rico, with a focus on the challenges the archipelago has faced in recent years.
These stories are shared through digital archiving, exhibitions, and documentary films.
The Lab, the first of its kind in Puerto Rico, is located at the General Library and is designed to be an active unit on campus, collaborating with STEM disciplines to gather community-based research and working with community organizations, including mutual aid groups and citizen scientist projects.
