To secure an internship in the STEM industry, students need to possess specific skills and qualifications. These include being actively enrolled and earning degrees in the fields of computer science, computer engineering, and electrical engineering.

Additionally, students are expected to maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and exhibit strong academic performance in science, technology, engineering, or math.

Specific skill sets are required for different functions, and candidates are expected to have experience and familiarity with a range of programming languages, enterprise frameworks, operating systems, and technical concepts such as security, information assurance, cryptography, digital signal processing, and network protocols.

Work experience, involvement in student groups, and leadership in relevant associations and societies are also valued.

Furthermore, candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work well in a team environment, possess technical aptitude, and show eagerness to learn and bring a unique perspective.

Communication skills, professionalism, and a strong understanding of the company and its products are also important.

Finally, qualities such as independent thinking, creativity, and innovation are highly valued.

A department manager at Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems emphasizes that internships allow employers to evaluate students more thoroughly than just through interviews, increasing the chances of making a quality full-time hire.

Internships also help students apply their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, gain valuable experience, and make more informed decisions about their career paths.

A program engineering manager at Northrop Grumman’s Electronic Systems sector mentions that they look for students with enthusiasm, initiative, and a strong work ethic. The internships allow both the student and the organization to assess whether they are a good fit for each other.
