On November 15, the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) hosted a virtual Emerging Leaders’ Summit, empowering students to explore internship and career opportunities across diverse fields.

This inspiring event connected over 75 enthusiastic students from 83 colleges and universities for a memorable one-day experience!

HACU also announced that applications are now open for college students and recent graduates to join the summer 2025 session of the HACU National Internship Program.

This incredible opportunity will run from June 2 to August 8, 2025, with an application deadline of February 10, 2025. Don’t miss out!

Also in November, HACU visited Bogota, Colombia, as part of its “HACU on the Road” tour. The presentation included a discussion on the state of Hispanic higher education and HACU programs and international initiatives.

There are more than 500 HSIs located in 28 states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

Most HSIs are situated in urban areas and are geographically concentrated, with 80% located in California, Florida, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, Texas, and Puerto Rico.

The ten states with the highest number of HSIs collectively enroll more than 300,000 Hispanic students and over 1.5 million students overall.

Emerging HSIs can be found in all but 12 states, including some states not typically associated with large Hispanic populations, such as Idaho, Kansas, and Georgia.

Over half of all Hispanic and Latino students attend a Hispanic-Serving Institution.

In October, HACU participated in a White House event with President Biden to celebrate Executive Order 14124, which established the first-ever White House Initiative on Advancing Educational Equity, Excellence, and Economic Opportunity through Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

This Executive Order also formed a President’s Board of Advisors on HSIs.

The event was attended by Miguel Cardona, United States secretary of education, HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores, Senior Vice President for Policy and Government Relations Lena T. Rodriguez, as well as presidents, chancellors, and leaders from the higher education community.

On December 3rd, HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores spoke at FIL Pensamiento, which is part of the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL).

The panel discussed the growth of the internationalization of higher education and barriers such as a discontinuous educational path.

HACU is set to hold its annual Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education April 29-30, 2025, celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of this event.

The forum will bring together academic leaders, public policymakers, federal agency representatives, and stakeholders from the corporate, community, and philanthropic sectors.
