Earlier this year, the 37th annual National American Indian Science & Engineering Fair was one of the largest competitive science fairs to date, bringing together students from Hawaii to North Carolina.

Awards were presented in various categories, including three grand prizes, senior awards in materials science, junior awards in systems software, environmental engineering, and robotics.

Other categories included intelligent machines, engineering technology, energy, sustainable materials and design, biomedical engineering, earth and environmental sciences, biochemistry, biomedical and health sciences, social sciences, plant sciences, physics and astronomy, and junior awards in microbiology, as well as senior awards in cellular and molecular biology and chemistry.

NAISEF participants continue to reimagine solutions to today’s challenges and inspire future generations through their pursuit of knowledge and understanding.

Previous winners have focused on enhancing the performance of filtration systems as communities face issues with natural resource contamination. Additionally, we conducted experiments to understand the impact of introducing mycelia, which are vital for supporting thriving ecosystems, to otherwise uninhabitable environments.

This research has contributed to a better understanding of Martian colonization and potential solutions for successful human habitation.

In 2023, one winner of the grand prize for science at the National American Indian Science and Engineering Fair advanced to the prestigious International Science and Engineering Fair, where she represented NWTC and showcased her exceptional scientific skills.
