Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Second Monday in October

POSTED ON Oct 14, 2024

The U.S. Department of Education announced that while some celebrate today as Columbus Day, others are marking Indigenous Peoples Day. “As we rethink how we celebrate our history, the Smithsonian Institution can help educators share differing perspectives an a more complete narrative,” the education department urged.

On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, 2024, Hispanic Engineer magazine joins Native voices nationwide to honor the contributions of Indigenous cultures.

Indigenous peoples have served, and continue to serve, in the United States Armed Forces with distinction and honor — at one of the highest rates of any group — defending our security every day. Read the 2024 proclamation here.

“Indigenous People have influenced much of what we do every day – from food and fashion to conservation, science and medicine,” posted Secretary Deb Haaland, 54th Secretary of the Department of the Interior, a member of the Pueblo of Laguna, and a 35th generation New Mexican, who is working to preserve public lands for future generations.

“Indigenous Knowledge, passed down by our ancestors, will help us leave this Earth better for future generations,” the interior secretary added, reiterating a message shared in Hispanic Engineer magazine’s 2023 Environment and Climate Issue.

In recognition of the day, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) announced on social media that the organization acknowledges and honors their Indigenous members and their vibrant communities.

Earlier in October, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) hosted a panel discussion on how Indigenous and Aboriginal employees enrich the workforce. In collaboration with Google, AISES discussed how their innovations in technology also foster community support and nurture the next generation of Native professionals.

Additionally, during the 2024 national conference, AISES announced the Indigenous Knowledge Research program is empowering high school, undergraduate, and graduate students to honor their heritage by integrating ancestral wisdom into their research. Through this program, AISES uplifts Indigenous knowledge to strengthen the futures of Indigenous peoples, cultures, and the scientific community.

AISES also highlighted partnerships with Native organizations to advance their mission. They showcased talented designers, Sky-Eagle C. and Brocade, for their inspiring designs that honor Indigenous artistry while showcasing modern innovation.

This year, Dr. Jani Ingram was the winner of the Ely S. Parker Award, the AISES organization’s highest honor. A Navajo chemist and educator, Dr. Ingram’s groundbreaking work in environmental chemistry is dedicated to creating tangible solutions for at-risk Indigenous communities.

As principal investigator of the Partnership of Native American Cancer Prevention program and director of the Bridging Native American Students to Bachelor’s Degrees program, she’s a true leader in research, education, and mentorship.

Dr. Ingram’s dedication to training the next generation of diverse scientists shines through her collaboration with Native American communities and her mentorship of students across disciplines. Dr. Ingram was honored at the 2024 AISES National Conference in San Antonio, Texas.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a day in the United States that celebrates and honors Indigenous American peoples and commemorates their histories and cultures. It is celebrated across the United States on the second Monday in October.
