America’s Voice, an organization working to put millions of undocumented immigrants on a path to citizenship, has published a blog thanking those who are keeping the health care services and food supply lines running.
“Immigrants are integral to feeding Americans, caring for the sick and elderly, and providing services that keep our economy afloat,” Douglas Rivlin, director of communication for America’s Voice, said in a statement.
Rivlin added that many don’t have access to sick days, paid leave, or adequate health care, and that those who are being asked to stay home or have been let go may not have access to unemployment insurance or another safety net.
AV said that’s why groups like the National Domestic Workers Alliance are fundraising to slow the spread of the virus by providing emergency assistance for domestic workers that enables them to stay home and healthy.
The blog also shared stories about farmworkers, medical care professionals, truck drivers, janitorial staff, domestic workers, and many others in various tweets and photos from United Farm Workers, and NPR, who said the prospect of food production workers testing positive for COVID-19 is a massive worry for the industry.
The immigrant workforce is the backbone of industries like agriculture, healthcare, and hospitality that sustain our economy, reads one AV headline, quoting a National Immigration Forum fact sheet which states that immigrants are indispensable to America’s healthcare workforce.
“Remember the immigrants at risk, who are part of our communities; working to stock your groceries, place food on your table, provide adequate child care services and treat the virus head-on,” urges AV. Click here to read more.
