The International Latino Book Awards has announced its 22nd annual literary festival. This year, the ceremony will be virtual, and the online event is scheduled for September 12. Over the past two decades, more than 3,000 authors and publishers have received awards at what’s now considered the largest Latino cultural event in the United States.
“About 40% of the winners were from major U.S. and int’l publishers, 25% from medium-sized publishing houses, and 35% were from small publishing houses or even self published,” wrote Kirk Whistler, co-founder of the event.”
The awards celebrate books in English, Spanish and Portuguese. Category awards include Latino-focused fiction, children’s picture books, poetry, and nonfiction. New categories planned for 2021 include the Dolores Huerta Best Community Service Book Award, Mimi Lozano Best Family History Book Award, and the Ambassador Julian Nava Best Educational Themed Book Award.
According to the news release, the awards are produced by Empowering Latino Futures, formerly known as Latino Literacy Now, a non-profit organization co-founded in 1997 by Edward James Olmos, the emcee for this year’s virtual ceremony.
Recently, the event has been held at Los Angeles City College (2019), California State University Dominguez Hills (2018, 2017, 2016), and Marriott Marquis San Francisco (2015).
