Hispanic-Serving Institution Week was marked with a variety of events on hundreds of campuses. At Texas State University, which was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education in 2011, the campus community came together as a collaboration of faculty, staff and students to host community conversations about diversity, student support services, and academic excellence.
Katarina Dominguez, director of academic coaching, April Barnes, director of student success initiatives, and Sylvia T. Gonzales, director of developing Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) programs, welcomed students and colleagues to a forum hosted to engage in conversations in what it means to be a Hispanic Serving Institution. The HSI designation was created to target federal appropriations for funding programs assisting institutions with at least 25% Hispanic enrollment. Texas State’s San Marcos Campus is located in the Texas Hill Country. The Texas State Round Rock Campus is located north of Austin in Round Rock.
