New Mexico State University has announced that its Latin American Programs department has changed the name of its celebration from Hispanic Heritage Month to “Latinx Heritage Month”. The move is part of ongoing efforts to increase inclusion and access.

According to the press release, Rio López, director of Latin American Programs, stated that the month-long celebration represents an achievement in the department’s commitment to intersectional programming within the university, which is a designated Hispanic and minority-serving institution.

López emphasized that this year’s events will offer learning experiences for faculty, staff, and the NMSU community, highlighting the importance of supporting all community members.

Latin American Programs has organized a series of student-centered events focusing on community building, networking, and collaborating with local organizations to create an inclusive environment.

Some upcoming events include the “Undocu-Entrepreneurship Webinar” by Immigrants Rising, Salsa Tasting and Tour by the Chile Pepper Institute, and LACumbia Night Sonido Cachimbo Live.

The celebration of Latinx culture extends beyond just one month and honors Latinx identity year-round through various events, student groups, programming, and research.

López said these initiatives are designed to be educational and engaging for individuals from all backgrounds, helping to build a diverse and connected community.

Recently, Dr. Francisco Solis, the interim president for San Antonio College, spoke to Hot Mustard on Speaking of SAC, a weekly talk show on KYSM San Antonio College Radio.

According to Solis, the SAC community marks the heritage celebration period under the name “Mi Gente Heritage Month.

Their theme for this year is “Our Stories: From Grassroots Communities to College Campuses and Beyond.”

The title reflects the question “Who is in charge of telling our stories?”

San Antonio College celebrated the start of their “Mi Gente Heritage Month” with a celebration of Latinx arts.
