Howard University President Wayne Frederick and Universidad del Valle Cali President Edgar Varela Barrios have signed a memorandum of understanding for both students and faculty in Washington D.C and Cali, a Colombian city in the southwest of Bogotá.
“Our visit laid the ground work for us to connect our students and community of Howard University with Universidad del Valle in an historic way,” said Director Tonija Hope Navas, Ralph Bunche International Affairs Center.
“During the academic year of 2018-19, we will produce a series of lectures, presentations and activities in honor of Colombia – highlighting the successes and examining the challenges that face their marginalized communities”
During an event hosted by the U.S. Embassy at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia, President Frederick gave a presentation on Howard University’s capability to produce scholars and professionals from around the world.
President Frederick, Vice President Hillman, and Director Navas met with the Mayor of Cali in Colombia and the representatives from two other universities in Cali, including Universidad Santiago de Cali.
The meeting explored possible areas of collaboration between the Mayor’s office and Howard University, including an urgent need for English language instructors to come to Cali to teach in Afro-Colombian communities.
