In July, a team of faculty and administrators from St. Cloud State University dedicated to AI was accepted into the new Institute on AI, Pedagogy, and the Curriculum of the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
They’ll participate in monthly meetings, virtual events, and other activities throughout the 2024-25 academic year.
Some of the issues the group will focus on include improving understanding of AI. A press release says the group will significantly impact the university by helping usher AI into faculty teaching strategies.
In related news, a recent study examined 558 Hispanic-serving institutions’ websites to evaluate their use of AI chatbots, particularly those designed to assist Spanish-speaking audiences.
Guillermo Ortega, an assistant professor at Texas Tech University, and Susana H. Hernández, assistant professor at Northern Arizona University, are two of the researchers for this study.
The study found that about 20% of these institutions use AI chatbots, with only 12% using bilingual English/Spanish chatbots.
The study recommends integrating Spanish into technological spaces to better serve Latinx students and their communities.
In Fall 2024, Auburn University’s College of Engineering will offer online and on-campus AI engineering programs at the master’s, graduate certificate, and undergraduate certificate levels, with a focus on core AI courses and technical electives.
The master’s degree program includes core courses in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data mining, and technical electives. The graduate certificate program comprises 12 hours of coursework, and the undergraduate certificate follows a similar curriculum.
All programs are available online or on-campus and require a background in computer science, software engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
