How many times do you check your phone a day?

POSTED ON Dec 31, 2020

Americans now check their phones once every 10 minutes, according to research by Asurion. That’s a 20 percent daily increase from a similar survey conducted two years ago, the tech care company said.  Eighteen- to 24- year-olds check their phones twice as much as the national average, and most respondents said one day is the longest they’d go without their smartphone.

Other survey findings include:

  • Staying Connected with friends and family is the #1 reason people use their phones, regardless of age or gender.
  • Baby Boomers are seven times more likely to text than they are to talk in-person and are twice as likely to send a text instead of call.
  • Nearly 9 out of 10 Americans get offended when someone they’re speaking with starts looking at their phone. However, three-quarters admit they’ve done it themselves. And, nearly 1 in 5 say they do this frequently.
  • Despite their increased phone use, nearly half of Americans say their smartphones actually help them achieve more work-life balance, not less.

In a related Asurion 2018 Consumer Tech Dependency Survey, when asked how long they could live without certain items, most respondents said one day is the longest they’d go without their smartphone.

  • 70% of people said they sleep with their smartphone within reach.
  • 45% of people keep their phones in their pockets and 32% keep them “out loose,” which indicates that the majority of us are merely a touch or a glance away from our phones at any given time.

Nearly a quarter of people (23%) have taken a work-related call while in the restroom, and 63% admit to rarely going to the bathroom without their phone in hand. This behavior may explain why 38% of Millennials said they’ve dropped their phone in the toilet, compared to 19% of Gen Xers and 6% of Boomers.
