Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine was established to promote representation and foster community engagement. It aims to motivate future innovators and leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.
The initiative started at Cornell University when a group of Hispanic engineers envisioned a publication to uplift a community often overlooked in engineering and technology.
The vision gained momentum at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) conference in California, where Tyrone Taborn met Carmella Mellado, who was producing SHPE’s newsletter.
After sharing a mock-up of the magazine cover, Carmella, moved by its potential, became the magazine’s first editor.
Carmella’s husband, Ray Mellado, recognized the importance of this mission and left his sales position to become the national sales leader for the magazine. Together, they laid the foundation for the nation’s oldest Hispanic-focused technology publication.

From the start, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology aimed to connect the Hispanic community to opportunities in STEM. As the official publication of SHPE, it highlighted the stories of trailblazers and celebrated achievements that might otherwise go unnoticed, inspiring students to dream big.
The magazine has become an essential tool in promoting equity in STEM fields, spotlighting Hispanic professionals and addressing systemic barriers. Organizations like SHPE further support mentorship, networking, and community building.
Today, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology stands as a testament to what can be achieved through unity and purpose.
It has evolved from a shared vision at a conference into a cornerstone of the Hispanic engineering movement, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers.
Its legacy of empowerment and representation serves as a reminder that change is achievable when we share our stories and advocate for our community.
