We all know the story of how Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook (or its prototype) in his dorm room at Harvard. In 2019, students at the University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside) set out to make their own dreams come true, with a little help from the UC Riverside Office of Technology Partnerships.
According to Margarita Manzo (LaunchPad student intern), UC Riverside’s Office of Technology, with The Blackstone Charitable Foundation and Techstars, delivers Launchpad at UCR to help students succeed in entrepreneurship and their careers.
Recently, two student-led startups at UC Riverside were among 30 semi-finalists selected across the Launchpad network competing for one of seven finalist spots and $50,000 in prizes.
Edge Sound Research, a startup success story, was founded in 2019 and led by UC Riverside graduates: Ethan Castro, a Ph.D. student, and Valtteri Salomaki, a UCR MBA student. The co-founders developed audio systems for gamers allowing them to both hear and feel sound in high definition.
Saru Recycling was co-founded by engineering students Mahmood Shaheen, Toluwani Semi Cole, Sebastian Mukuria, and Jacob Tivey. In
the fall of 2020, they joined social impact founders in the Blackstone LaunchPad and Techstars Fall Fellowship.
Now, the startup is well on its way “reimagining recycling and waste management for a greener future” as they posted on their official Twitter channel.
According to their website, the clean technology company, which began as a student-founded project focused on combating climate change, is on the verge of releasing its first unit, Mk I.
