POSTED ON Mar 24, 2022

The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) has announced dates for HACU’s 2022 Capitol Forum. Each spring, advocates for higher education success convene at what has become a national platform for winning public- and private-sector support for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

HSIs are defined as accredited, degree-granting public or private not-for-profit institutions of higher education with 25% or more total undergraduate Hispanic full-time equivalent student enrollment. A 2019-20 Fact Sheet compiled by Excelencia in Education shows that there are now 569 HSIs, representing 18% of all colleges and universities.

HSIs enroll the majority of Latino undergraduates. Two-thirds (67%) of all Latino undergraduates are enrolled at an HSI. Over the last 10 years, HSIs grew from 293 to 569. Almost half of the students enrolled at HSIs (46%) are Latino.

HSIs are located in 30 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. California has the most HSIs (175), followed by Texas (100), Puerto Rico (64), and New York (35). Arkansas, District of Columbia, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, and Utah each have one HSI. Over 84% of HSIs are either in the city (305) or suburbs (171) while 16% are in towns (53) or rural areas (40).

Overall, 56% of HSIs are four-year institutions (public— 26%; private—30%), and 44% are two-year institutions (public—41%; private—3%). The majority of HSIs are public institutions: 67% of HSIs are public and 33% are private.

According to HACU, this year’s congressional meetings will take place by video or teleconference to allow higher education leaders and supporters to speak with their representatives. The 2022 event will be held virtually, April 5-6.

The Capitol Forum brings together leaders of colleges and universities, public policy makers, federal agency leaders, organizations, corporate, community, and philanthropic representatives to shape and promote an agenda for Congress and the country at HACU’s Annual Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education.
