The Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) has announced fall internship opportunities through the SACNAS Career Center, a hub for jobs and career resources, to kick off the new semester.

You can also apply for a 6-month mentorship program to build skills, gain guidance, and join a community that supports you. Applications are open now.

Three months ago, Angel Martinez announced on LinkedIn that he would be joining Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), a subsidiary of Exelon Corporation, as an electrical engineering intern.

Martinez, an electrical engineering student at the University of Houston, Cullen College of Engineering, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to apply his engineering knowledge to real-world projects in the energy sector.

In his LinkedIn update about the 10 weeks he spent working this summer, Martinez stated that he interned with the Electric Distribution Engineering & Standards team, led by a licensed professional engineer holding a Project Management Professional certification.

He also had a mentor who guided him through engineering challenges, helping him understand the operations of a major utility.

Among the highlights of Martinez’s internship, he mentioned leading a cross-departmental capstone project to improve an in-house vegetation management app.

This included collecting input from field crews, contractors, and office teams, researching regulations, and ensuring recommendations aligned with Exelon’s core values.

He also analyzed large datasets using Power BI to uncover operational insights and support data-driven decisions, as well as streamlined work order processes to reduce completion times and improve team efficiency.

Halfway through the internship, Martinez had the chance to join the asset management and reliability team, which split off from the original Electric Distribution Engineering & Standards team.

This experience enabled him to focus on asset health strategies and asset management.

Beyond the technical work, Martinez mentioned that the program provided unforgettable experiences, including presenting to BGE executives, meeting the CEOs of BGE and Exelon, and hearing from a Maryland Senator about the policy impacts.

He expressed gratitude to his mentors, teammates, and the entire BGE/Exelon community for making this an unforgettable chapter in his career. Martinez hopes to graduate in spring 2027.

In 2024, Martinez shared his excitement on LinkedIn about starting a remote position as an artificial intelligence (AI) efficiency trainer. This position was offered a few months after he attended a SHPE Leadership Development Conference.

Founded in Anaheim, SHPE boasts 20,000+ members in 320 chapters in every U.S. state and territory.
