Late September 2024, Hurricane Helene made landfall in the Big Bend, causing widespread flooding and power outages in Southwest Florida.

Florida Gulf Coast University’s campus was not affected by the storm, and staff worked to clean up minor debris. Academic activities continued as normal, and the university returned to its regular schedule on Monday, September 30.

In response to Hurricane Milton, several universities in Florida, including the University of Florida, Florida International University, Miami Dade College, Florida Atlantic University, University of Central Florida, and Florida A&M University, closed campuses, suspended classes, and operations to ensure the safety of their students and staff.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for South Florida through Wednesday, October 9, 2024.

Miami Dade College, Florida Atlantic University, University of Central Florida, and Florida A&M University announced the suspension of classes and operations through Thursday, October 10. They anticipated resuming normal operations on Friday, October 11.

The University of Florida canceled classes and closed offices from Wednesday through Thursday due to Hurricane Milton.

Florida Gulf Coast University also issued a weather advisory and closed campus from Tuesday, October 8 through Friday, October 11.

The National Hurricane Center expected the region to feel the storm’s impacts through Thursday afternoon.

The University of Central Florida anticipated reopening for normal operations on Saturday, October 12, with classes resuming on Monday, October 14.

Similarly, Florida A&M University’s satellite campuses were closed from Wednesday through Friday, with plans to reopen for normal operations on Saturday, October 12, and classes to resume on Monday, October 14.

All academic assignments and exams, including online classes, remained suspended until Monday.
