Last week, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) announced that it conferred more than 3,200 degrees during six commencement ceremonies on campus. According to FAU’s newsdesk, the graduates included a mother, who was receiving a master’s degree in health administration, and her son, 17, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in data analytics and a perfect 4.0 GPA prior to receiving his diploma from FAU High School.
“Congratulations to the spring class of 2022,” said FAU President John Kelly on Twitter. “The skills you now possess make you uniquely capable of creating a positive and lasting change. As the world calls on you to innovate, hold true to the values that have made you a successful Owl and be confident in your ability to answer.”
FAU also said more than seventy of the degree recipients in the spring graduating class are over the age of 50, seventeen are over the age of 60, and two are over the age of 70. The oldest graduate is 76, and the youngest is 16.
The university also shared stories of first-generation students achieving their dreams. Established in 1961, FAU opened its doors in 1964 as the fifth public university in Florida. According to FAU’s website, the university now serves more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students across six campuses located along the southeast Florida coast and is ranked as a top public university by U.S. News and World Report. In 2017, FAU received federal designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, which is awarded to colleges and universities with an enrollment of full-time Hispanic undergraduate students of at least 25 percent.
