The STEM Transformation Institute at Florida International University in Miami is among 13 institutes and centers whose work has earned them the university’s Preeminent and Emerging Preeminent Program status.
The university’s Preeminent and Emerging Preeminent Program designations are for five years with annual renewals to ensure continued excellence.
Designation as a preeminent program is recognition for contributions to advancing FIU’s BeyondPossible2020, a roadmap to the university’s future, and enhancing the university’s strategy and reputation.
FIUBeyondPossible2020 is focused on student success, achieving the Carnegie Very High Research Designation, expanding the financial base, and preeminent programs.
“Tonight is the night we celebrate the success of our colleagues,” said President Mark B. Rosenberg, to a crowd of 150, who gathered at the Dotson Pavillion at Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
At the recognition ceremony and reception held Wednesday, June 20, Rosenberg noted that the 13 directors of FIU institutes and centers being feted at the event represent how FIU is “moving from a more traditional institution of higher education to a more 21st-century institution of higher education.”
In 2017, FIU ranked 26th among U.S. public universities and 61st in the world in patent production. In 2015, FIU was classified Research I by the Carnegie Foundation, a goal which had originally been set for 2020.
The Preeminent Programs are Center for Children and Families, Extreme Events Institute, Global Forensic Justice Center, Institute for Resilient and Sustainable Coastal Infrastructure, Institute of Water and Environment and STEM Transformation Institute.
The STEM Transformation Institute is a response to national calls for 100,000 STEM teachers and an additional 1,000,000 STEM professionals by 2020. Through its mission, the Institute simultaneously is increasing the number of STEM professionals, including teachers, graduating from FIU and entering the workforce.
The Emerging Preeminent Programs are Brain, Behavior and the Environment Program; Cybersecurity@FIU; FIU Tropics; Health Inequities and Disparities Program; Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center; Translational Molecular Discoveries; the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab.
Each of these programs will receive cluster hire priority, fundraising priority, travel funds, grant proposal support, space priority consideration, student support priority, and/or priority for bridge funding between grants and more.
