Isaac Torres was born and raised in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from El Paso High School and for a young kid from Ciudad Juarez, educating himself in chemistry was his ticket out of poverty.
Issac graduated from University of Texas-El Paso with a GPA of 4.0. He has been accepted into the PhD program in Materials Science at Northwestern University and is the first in his immediate family to graduate from college and the first in both of his extended families to pursue a Ph.D.
During his time at UTEP, Issac was the media director for the student chapter of the American Chemical Society.
He helped judge science fairs, created chemistry circuses to inspire future scientists, worked as a researcher and authored a publication on the synthesis of nanowires.
He helped fund his college education by being a self-employed tutor in algebra, calculus, physics, general chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry.
Isaac credits a large portion of his success to what he calls a “positive feedback loop,” earning good grades to win scholarships and repeating the cycle. He also credits his mentors. In his free time, he enjoys composing electronic music, bicycling, the occasional beer or two, and high-speed motorcycle rides. Issac hopes to start a business taking waste products and turning them into energy-related necessities.
