On June 1, 2017, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) announced that the Board of Directors had selected Raquel Tamez as their new CEO. Before Tamez was appointed CEO of SHPE, she served as a chief legal officer for a national nonprofit that creates employment for people with significant disabilities. Other positions she held include litigation and E-discovery for CSC, an IT service and solution provider, in-house counsel for Mary Kay, corporate counsel for ACS Inc., a Xerox company, and labor attorney with the state of Texas.
Raquel was born in Texas to Mexican immigrants. Her father was a migrant farm worker before moving to the states. Raquel grew up as the youngest daughter in a family of six children and went on to graduate from the University of Texas at Austin and St. Mary’s University School of Law.
“No doubt, I owe the foundation of who I am as a person and my success in life to my parents, and especially my father, who always made me feel invincible. And still does,” she told Vanguard Law magazine.
Writing in an annual report, along with Miguel Alemany the SHPE Board Chair, Tamez says:
“Looking back on SHPE’s 44-year history, we are so incredibly proud of how far our familia has come, and for its monumental achievements in 2018.”
SHPE is the largest organization serving Hispanics in STEM, supporting Hispanics as they earn their degrees and credentials, and build their careers. They also advocate and influence diversity, inclusion, and equity in schools and workplaces across the nation, and work with corporations, academic institutions, government agencies, and other organizations, to facilitate employment and career growth opportunities and leadership roles for Hispanics in STEM.
