A Florida International University accounting graduate has been appointed CEO of a Miami-based facial recognition company. FIU featured Melissa Doval ’03 on its website this week. Doval, an FIU accounting alum with professional experience in finance, human resources, business strategy, and technology, is the new chief executive of the AI firm with a reported ethical approach to the budding technology.
According to FIU News, Doval worked full-time in an accounting business to fund her full-time accounting studies at FIU and volunteered with her sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma. Doval later earned a master’s degree in accounting from Nova Southeastern University.
After more than a decade, Doval began work as a consultant for minority-led businesses. At Kairos, she served as an accountant, working her way up to chief financial officer and now CEO. According to FIU, Kairos is determined to battle facial recognition bias, through diverse data and algorithms, rivaling that of bigger companies like Amazon.
“You’re going to be looking at more accurate, faster, more robust facial recognition models to be deployed in a lot of different ways going forward,” she told FIU News. “Think of seeing it in toys, as part of elections for 2020 and many other things we are excited about.”
New reports show Florida is a hotspot for women-led business, with Tampa being recognized as the No. 1 city for women to start a company and the Miami Metropolitan Area ranked at No. 10, FIU News says.
