Artificial intelligence (AI), reskilling, upskilling, career growth, company culture, company values, and work-life balance are key workplace trends highlighted in the 2025 Work Monitor.

This reflects the significant changes that have taken place in the world of work since the United Nations General Assembly began observing World Youth Skills Day in 2014.

The World Economic Forum’s 2018 Future of Jobs Report projected that by 2025, more than half of all workplace tasks would be performed by machines.

While the rise of automation has transformed many aspects of work, the report estimated that 133 million new jobs could be created, despite a loss of 75 million jobs due to automation.

The report also indicated that the types of tasks performed by robots would evolve, as they start to take on roles traditionally held by humans.

Consequently, human workers would transition to roles that involve management, advising, reasoning, and decision-making skills, requiring reskilling to focus on creativity and innovation.

Reskilling will be essential for all workers, as the future workforce—comprised of humans, machines, and algorithms—will demand constantly evolving skills.

The Future of Jobs Report 2025 drew insights from over 1,000 of the world’s largest employers. It indicated that some of the fastest-growing jobs would include:

  • Data specialists
  • Fintech engineers
  • AI and machine learning specialists
  • Software and application developers
  • Security management specialists
  • Data warehousing specialists
  • Specialists in autonomous and electric vehicles
  • UI and UX designers
  • Light truck or delivery service drivers
  • Internet of Things specialists
  • Data analysts and scientists
  • Environmental engineers
  • Information security analysts and DevOps engineers
  • On July 15, 2025, the UN will mark the 10th anniversary of World Youth Skills Day, with the theme “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills.”

In New York, the UN Youth Office will kick off the day with an event emphasizing the importance of digital and AI skills in shaping inclusive, sustainable societies, empowering youth, advancing education, and promoting the ethical use of technology.

Another virtual discussion will focus on “rewiring the future” and how AI can empower girls and young people during the green transition in the Asia-Pacific region.

UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited and the UN Youth Office have invited the public to share their stories using the hashtags #WorkLifeReady and #YouthLead.

According to the UN Youth Office, 1.2 billion young people are expected to enter the global job market by 2030. However, projections indicate that only 420 million new jobs will be created, highlighting an urgent need for action.
