The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) recently announced its commitment to the U.S. Department of Education’s “YOU Belong in STEM” initiative at the second White House conference.
SHPE representatives shared their success in surpassing their goal of engaging 7,500 Hispanic youths, reaching 16,888 individuals through SHPE Virtual STEM Labs.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to providing $3.6 million through the ScholarSHPE program by 2025, having already awarded $3.3 million in the first year.
According to the Department of Education, the “YOU Belong in STEM” initiative is critical to the administration’s “Raise the Bar: STEM Excellence for All Students” initiative to strengthen and increase science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.
The Department has published a STEM Dear Colleague Letter to support the initiative and its goals.
It was sent to state and district leaders outlining how federal education funds can be used to enhance STEM teaching and learning.
The Department also hosted the 2024 National STEM Festival and partnered with several organizations to develop a space communication campaign illustrating the value and benefits of the space enterprise.
Additionally, it partnered to identify the key challenges regarding the supply and demand of STEM teachers at the state and local levels.
