The University of Rhode Island held commencement ceremonies from May 16 to 18, celebrating the achievements of approximately 3,300 graduate and undergraduate students.

Among the speakers from the Graduate School of Oceanography was Puga (Diya) Banerjee, who graduated with a Ph.D. in oceanography.

She plans to pursue a career that utilizes her research, data analysis, and project management skills.

In December, the University of Rhode Island Coastal Institute announced its Emerging Coastal Leader awardees.

These graduate students represented various disciplines, including marine affairs, biological oceanography, and ocean engineering.

The award winners included Ph.D. candidates specializing in biological oceanography, marine affairs, fisheries, animal and veterinary sciences, ocean engineering, and the ecotoxicology of microplastics and persistent organic pollutants in Eastern Oysters found in Narragansett Bay, particularly concerning contaminant spikes during storm events.

In May 2025, URI announced that a multidisciplinary team, led by a scientist from Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, received funding to enhance the exploration and description of exotic, gelatinous, deep-sea animals using next-generation ocean exploration technology.

The group has been awarded significant funding over three years from the Ocean Shot Research Grant Program, an initiative designed to promote innovative research in ocean discovery and technology.

This funding will support innovative approaches, including cutting-edge imaging technology and underwater robotics, to create high-resolution 3D images, preserve tissue samples, and generate reference genomic data for newly discovered marine species.

The University of Rhode Island College of Engineering recently hosted the launch of the VentureWell Ocean Enterprise Accelerator, which welcomed bluetech startups from across the country.

The event marked the beginning of a NOAA-supported initiative by the nonprofit VentureWell to advance ocean innovation and strengthen the U.S. blue economy.

Participants explored customer discovery, technology development, and market opportunities while connecting with mentors.

They also toured the University of Rhode Island’s research facilities on the Narragansett Bay Campus, which has become an increasingly dynamic hub for ocean science and innovation.

Graduates of the University of Delaware Class of 2025 celebrated the culmination of their college careers at Delaware Stadium on May 24.

Last spring, a marine science major with a concentration in oceanography reflected on their time at the University of Delaware.

Initially from the “Ocean State” of Rhode Island, this distinguished scholar, whose interest in marine science began at a young age, expressed gratitude for the research opportunities available at the university’s College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, particularly in learning about phytoplankton and chlorophyll.
