A recent study has found that California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is one of the top universities in the nation for upward mobility of its students. The research is based on millions of anonymous tax filings and tuition records from the federal government between 1999 and 2013.
“This study speaks to the value of a degree from CSUB, the difference the University makes in transforming our students’ lives, and is a testament to the commitment of our faculty, staff and administrators to student success,” said President Horace Mitchell. “Our University and our graduates are key drivers of economic development in our region.”
Researchers compared the incomes of college graduates in their 30s from low-income families with that of their parents. According to the study by The Equality of Opportunity Project, 81 percent of CSUB students who enrolled in the late 1990s moved from the bottom fifth of the income distribution to the top three-fifths. The study’s authors included researchers from UC Berkeley, Stanford and Brown University.
The ranking is the latest in a series of accolades for CSU Bakersfield. Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce ranks CSUB number 6 for earnings, academic preparation, and graduate degree attainment.
CSUB was ranked in the 95th percentile by The Brookings Institute for expected student earnings. The Washington Monthly ranked CSUB number 1 “Best Bang for the Buck Western Colleges” and The Economist’s ranking of colleges and universities based on the economic value of attendance placed CSUB at number 10 out of 1,275 four-year, non-vocational U.S. colleges and universities.
