The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Mildred García as the 11th chancellor of the California State University system. She is the first Latina appointed to oversee CSU’s 23-campus system and is set to commence her tenure as Chancellor on October 1, 2023.
Garcia recently served as president of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) and has previously served as president of California State University, Fullerton, and California State University, Dominguez Hills.
Raised in New York City by her parents, who moved from Puerto Rico, Garcia is the first in her family to earn a degree. She obtained her associate degree from New York City Community College, a bachelor’s in business education from Bernard M. Baruch College, and a master’s in business education from New York University.
At Teachers College, Columbia University, she earned a master’s and a doctorate in higher education administration. García has served on several advisory boards, including the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, and the Committee on Measures of Student Success by the U.S. Secretary of Education.
In other news, the Association of College and University Educators (ACUE) recently honored California State University (CSU) as one of seven colleges and universities to receive the “Movement Maker” award for its commitment to student success through innovative, evidence-based teaching practices.
CSU was recognized alongside Cal State LA and Cal State Northridge. The award was presented at ACUE’s inaugural National Higher Education Teaching Conference held on June 22-23.
Together with ACUE, CSU provides professional development programs to faculty systemwide that educate and inspire them to use research-backed methods that lead to higher retention rates, deeper learning, and improved equity.
Cal State LA and CSUN were highlighted for their participation in ACUE. Cal State LA was an inaugural partner of ACUE and contributed to its original faculty development framework through faculty focus groups and surveys.
They have been an active member of the ACUE network since 2015, participating in classroom demo videos, assisting in developing their curriculum, and engaging in ACUE research studies. Over 450 Cal State LA faculty members have completed some level of ACUE programming, with 173 completing its full 25-module certificate course.
Catherine Haras, executive director of the Center for Effective Teaching and Learning (CETL) at Cal State LA, expressed her pride in the university’s recognition.
She said, “We are honored to be named a Movement Maker. It has been a privilege working with ACUE to improve the professional development of Cal State LA faculty. Over 450 faculty members have completed some ACUE programming, with 10% earning the full ACUE certificate.”
Since 2016, Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, and the CSU system have collaborated with ACUE to ensure that faculty members use innovative, evidence-based teaching practices that prioritize equitable student success.
Penny MacCormack, chief academic officer of ACUE, praised Cal State LA, Cal State Northridge, and the CSU system for their leadership in teaching and learning, dedication to student success and equity, and recognition of faculty members’ commitment to teaching.
The CETL at Cal State LA launched a comprehensive training and credentialing program in 2016, administered online through ACUE. The program allowed the center to expand its successful Course Redesign for Student Success program, which offers online professional development modules focused on effective teaching practices.
Additionally, CETL designed and launched a faculty development module on civic learning for ACUE. Cal State LA faculty members have also been featured in ACUE blogs on various topics, such as student-centered teaching strategies and engaging students in the digital age.
