More and more students are improving their practical computer skills, and discovering that coders have the power to create websites, apps, and software for any field. Last summer, the University of California, Riverside (UCR) and the Riverside Unified School District announced the Computer Science (CS) 4 All Code Camp.

The free one-week intensive program ran three separate sessions for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels from June through July. The goal of the program was to provide a solid coding foundation, and role models showing that computer science is a viable field.

The program was inspired by CSforAll, an initiative developed by the National Science Foundation and U.S. Department of Education. More than 80 local middle and high school students attend the camp each summer to develop coding skills that are applicable to real life, UCR says.

According to Code.org, since January, 32 states have passed legislation and funded $44.4 million to expand access to and diversity in K-12 computer science. This summer, almost 4,000 middle and high school teachers, and thousands more elementary school teachers are attending Code.org’s summer workshops across the country.

In Texas, eighth-graders are learning how to code a drone and make it fly at University of Texas at Dallas coding camps. The program spans 12 weeks and covers more than 40 topics, and is led by the Center for Computer Science Education and Outreach in the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

CSforALL has announced that it will convene the national computer science education community in Salt Lake City, Utah at the University of Utah for the 2019 CSforALL Summit. The event will engage local schools, communities, industry, media and more.
