Children learn Science through Play in Texas State program

POSTED ON Oct 30, 2019

A pilot program called Science in the Parks is helping Texas State University share new science about child development through games and studies run by graduate and undergraduate students of the university’s psychology program. Science in the Parks aims to promote science outreach in local parks and at community events, Texas State said in a statement.

Since the program launched in June, nearly 90 children have participated and Texas State undergraduate and graduate students have had the opportunity to work directly with area families.

Designed in partnership with the City of San Marcos Parks and Recreation Department, the program invites children to participate in studies that help researchers understand more about how children’s social interactions with others change as they get older. The findings from some of the studies were shared at the 2019 meeting of the Cognitive Development Society (CDS) in October. The CDS provides a voice for scholars, practitioners, and others who are interested in change and continuity in the intellectual processes that support mental life.

Texas State says the Science in the Parks program will continue at the San Marcos Children’s Park on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout the end of 2019. According to Texas State, the San Marcos Campus, located in a growing community of 63,000 people in the Austin Metro area, is on the banks of the San Marcos River and provides recreational activities throughout the year.
