The Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) recently announced the winners of the National Diversity in STEM Conference Presentation Awards, which were held in Portland from October 26th to October 28th.

The awards recognized graduate and undergraduate students for their research and presentation skills in various categories.

Undergraduate poster presentation winners for engineering included Juan Castano from Universidad CES in Medellin, Colombia; Wei Wang from Berkeley City College; Dominique Gooden from the University of Wisconsin in Madison; Mabel Espinoz from the University of California in Merced; Darian Rosales from Mesa Community College; Elderson Mercado Rivera from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez; and Polina Popova from San Diego State University.

In the Computer & Information Sciences category, the winners were Analiese Gonzale from Cypress College, Ethan Tam from the University of California in Berkeley, Haley Lepe from MiraCosta College, and Mirakle Wright from the University of Colorado Denver.

Esai Lopez from Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the Graduate Student Poster Presentation category, while Layla James from Navajo Technical University was the winner in the Materials research category.

Emmanuel Rivera-Iglesias from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst won the Graduate Student Poster Presentation for Chemistry.

Winners in the STEM Education & Learning category included Brandon Patrick Respicio from the University of Guam, Amy Wu from the University of California in Berkeley, and Kely Juan from the University of North Texas.

Mariah Lee from Diné College received the Tribal Colleges and Universities Student Research Award, and Brianson Yazzie from Northern Arizona University won the Native American/Indigenous Student Research Abstract Award.

The student winners came from various universities and colleges, including Washington State University, University of Washington in Seattle, University of California in Davis, University of California in Santa Cruz, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, The University of Minnesota Twin Cities, University of California in Irvine, Texas A&M University, University of Michigan – Ann Arbor, Texas A&M University School of Medicine, and Louisiana State University, Cal Poly Humboldt.
