This poster, issued by Joint Base San Antonio (JBSA), features Joseph Medicine Crow, the last Crow War Chief, in full regalia.

JBSA, a prominent Department of Defense installation, is celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month with the theme of “Celebrating Respect, Culture, and Education”.

Throughout November, they will honor and recognize the rich cultural tapestry of their American Indian and Indigenous community.

The National Security Agency/Central Security Service account, known as “home to code makers and codebreakers,” is also celebrating National American Indian Heritage Month.

They are taking this opportunity to honor the valuable contributions made by American Indians and Alaska Natives throughout America’s cryptologic history and to recognize those who continue to ensure the security of our nation.

During World War 1, Indigenous code-talkers were used for the first time. Native American languages and codes proved too difficult for German codebreakers, who had successfully cracked other English-based codes used by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF).

The AEF was a formation of the United States Armed Forces on the Western Front during World War I.

To mark Native American Heritage Month, also known as American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month, New York City Public Schools are sharing their resources that recognize the history, culture, and contributions of Indigenous people.
