From lasers to LED monitors and the intricate workings of smartphones and MRI scanners in hospitals, the impact of quantum science is vast and exciting.

The Global Positioning System (GPS), which helps us navigate the world, relies on the quantum mechanics of ultra-precise atomic clocks.

Using quantum mechanics, scientists and engineers create revolutionary technologies.

The International Telecommunication Union has announced a new “Quantum for Good” track, which will be launched at the AI for Good Global Summit in July 2025.

Earlier this month, ITU brought the conversation to the film and multimedia festival South by Southwest (SXSW), where executives in strategy and Operations, business development, and operations discussed the future of quantum and the importance of international cooperation.

According to the ITU, quantum computing has the potential to revolutionize fields such as materials science, drug discovery, and energy optimization, offering solutions to problems that surpass the capabilities of classical computers.

World Quantum Day is an exciting annual celebration that highlights the wonders of quantum science and technology, aiming to enhance global public understanding and appreciation of these fields.

This year is particularly special because UNESCO has designated 2025 as the International Year of Quantum.

Just as Pi Day on March 14 honors the digits of pi (3.14), we celebrate World Quantum Day on April 14 in tribute to Planck’s constant, a fundamental concept in quantum physics.

Montana State University (MSU) is gearing up to celebrate its second World Quantum Day in the weeks leading up to April 14.

They’re offering middle and high school teachers across Montana some fantastic resources – free kits and downloadable materials specifically designed to inspire students to explore the captivating world of quantum science!

The Science Math Resource Center at MSU, committed to advancing education and workforce development for the Applied Quantum CORE (QCORE), is curating these fantastic resources for our dedicated educators.

They’re giving away 40 free kits for new teachers eager to share the excitement of World Quantum Day with their students, plus an additional 20 expansion packs for those who received kits in 2024.

To make this initiative even more enriching, QCORE will host an online professional development workshop to guide educators through the resources included in the kits.

Educators are encouraged to consider how they can share these invaluable resources with as many students as possible, with a focus on reaching groups that have traditionally been underrepresented in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

At MSU, quantum science and technology are at the heart of groundbreaking research programs.

Ongoing projects, such as the Applied Quantum CORE (QCORE), supported by the Air Force Research Laboratory, will explore testing prototype quantum components in their unique, icy environments.

Related research initiatives at MSU, including the MonArk Quantum Foundry (a joint venture with the University of Arkansas), Spectrum Lab (which connects research with local businesses), the Optical Technology Center, and the Montana Nanotechnology Facility, are making significant strides.

According to the U.S. National Quantum Initiative, quantum mechanics unravels the mysteries of atoms and particles—the very building blocks of our universe.

By harnessing the power of quantum mechanics, scientists and engineers have developed revolutionary technologies that profoundly impact our everyday lives.
