Over the last decade, Jessica Perez Torres has gained peer-to-peer recognition in acoustic systems. She is an engineering expert in systems analysis and passive systems engineering at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport’s sensors and sonar systems department. Jessica provides guidance to a team of engineers and scientists responsible for a sonar system in a Virginia-class submarine. This system brought historic changes to sonar, which included overcoming technical challenges.
While attending high school, Jessica often tinkered with electronics. By the time she started college at the University of Puerto Rico, she knew that she wanted to pursue a career in computer technology and engineering.
During her junior year, she attended a job fair to make sure that opportunities aligned with her field. Jessica discovered that working for the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport would satisfy this goal. She began her career in 2010, after completing two co-op programs and graduating with a bachelor’s degree
Jessica is still realizing her dream as she contributes to the success of NUWC Division Newport and the fleet. Recently, she won a Women of Color STEM Award in the Technology Rising Star category.
