Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Hispanic Engineer

POSTED ON Sep 26, 2024

During Hispanic Heritage Month, Hispanic Engineer magazine celebrates the contributions of those whose ancestors came from Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Venezuela, Chile, Guatemala, Ecuador, Bolivia, Haiti, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Paraguay, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama, Uruguay, Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Spain, Dominica, and more.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

As part of the celebration, SHPE is hosting parties and activities across the country as it counts down to its national convention in Anaheim from October 30 to November 3, 2024.

Before then, SHPE’s 50th Anniversary Fiesta-Atlanta will be held on October 10 to commemorate half a century of partnering with Hispanic/Latino/Latina/Latinx professionals in STEM fields.

Fellow SHPE members and industry leaders will celebrate SHPE’s remarkable journey and the countless achievements of its members.

All year long, SHPE has serialized the “50 Stories for 50 Years” feature on its website. Since January 2024, SHPE has released episodes featuring the ‘origin story’ of influential SHPE members.

These individuals include those who have been with the organization since its inception and new members who have recently joined SHPE.

One of the most prominent SHPE figures in Hispanic Engineer magazine is Rodrigo “Rod” Garcia (1943-2022), the founder of SHPE.

He was profiled in the magazine many times over the past four decades. Read his last interview here.

In July 2022, SHPE announced his passing in an email letter containing glowing tributes to his contributions.

He is remembered as a visionary leader who began a national science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) organization in his garage.

According to SHPE, Garcia remained involved in the organization he co-founded with other Hispanic engineers and attended the National Convention each year, taking the time to talk to students one-on-one to learn about their stories and motivations.

SHPE CEO Chris Wilkie wrote, “His legacy is over five decades long. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.”

In 2021, SHPE announced the addition of a new honorary award, the Rodrigo Garcia Founder’s Award, to its SHPE Technical Achievement and Recognition (STAR) awards.

The award honors his accomplishments and memorializes him as the guiding light of the organization leading Hispanics in STEM.
