Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology magazine is proudly celebrating its 40th anniversary. The publication’s journey began with an initial conversation that gained momentum at the California Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) conference.

At that event, SHPE was still in its early stages, representing the hopes and ambitions of a growing movement.

Tyrone Taborn met Carmela Mellado, who was producing SHPE’s newsletter then. With a mock-up of the first magazine cover in hand, Taborn shared his concept with her.

This moment was transformative, as her passion and commitment to the cause made her the natural choice to become the magazine’s first editor.

Carmela’s husband, Ray Mellado, who was thriving as a sales manager at Xerox, also recognized the importance of this mission. In a bold and selfless decision, he left his job to become the national sales leader for Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology.

Together, they laid the foundation for the nation’s oldest Hispanic-focused technology publication.

Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology aimed to serve as a bridge connecting the Hispanic community to opportunities in engineering and technology.

As the official publication of SHPE, it chronicled the stories of trailblazers, celebrated milestones, and highlighted achievements that might otherwise go unnoticed.

The magazine has become a source of pride and inspiration, showcasing role models who have defied the odds and redefined possibilities. It provides a platform where Hispanic engineers can envision themselves, and where students are encouraged to dream bigger than their current circumstances may suggest.

For a long time, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology has catalyzed change by amplifying voices and raising awareness.

By highlighting the achievements of Hispanic professionals and addressing systemic barriers, the magazine’s stories inspire young people to see themselves as innovators.

Today, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology is a testament to what can be achieved when a community unites with purpose and determination.

The magazine has evolved from a vision shared at a conference to a cornerstone of the Hispanic engineering movement, reaching hundreds of thousands of readers in print and digital formats.

It serves as a reminder that change is achievable when we share our stories and advocate for the opportunities we deserve. Though the journey is far from over, the foundation is strong.

With every story told and success celebrated, Hispanic Engineer & Information Technology continues to inspire a future where inclusion is the norm.
