The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) founded this program in 1986, starting with just a few institutional members.

Today, HACU represents more than 500 colleges and universities from the United States, Latin America, Spain, and school districts throughout the U.S.

Recently, HNIP received recognition from the U.S. Senate for its contributions. According to HACU, a bipartisan Senate Resolution, co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), and John Cornyn (R-Texas), recognized the 30th anniversary of the HACU National Internship Program (HNIP)

This resolution acknowledges that HNIP has been cited by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) as a resource to increase Hispanic intern recruitment in the federal government.

It has also produced over 14,000 alumni who now work in the federal government, state or local government, and private industry.

HACU President and CEO Antonio R. Flores expressed his gratitude towards the Senate for recognizing this program’s 30-year milestone. He also thanked the federal and corporate partners who have given interns from Hispanic-Serving Institutions and other colleges and universities invaluable opportunities to gain real-world experience.

Senators Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), and Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) joined the resolution as co-sponsors.

HACU is the only national association representing existing and emerging Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), with headquarters in San Antonio, Texas, and regional offices in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, California.
