The American Indian Higher Education Consortium (AIHEC) has announced that applications are open for the 2025 Health Sciences Summer Institute, an immersive 4-week experience for tribal college and university students to explore careers in the health sciences.

The onsite portion of the program will take place from June 16-27 on the University of North Dakota’s campus.

Additionally, AIHEC has announced that the next Health Research 101 Webinar on Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Research Methods webinar will occur on March 21, 2025.

The first installment of the Health Research 101 Webinar Series featured Dr. Melanie Nadeau, vice chair of Indigenous Health at the University of North Dakota.

Dr. Nadeau gave a presentation on Indigenized research methods in the health sciences, followed by time for audience Q&A.

The Health Research 101 webinar series aims to provide introductory information on conducting health sciences research, specifically emphasizing incorporating indigenous perspectives and methodologies.

Indigenous experts share insights on topics like ethical challenges in research, building a research question and study design, indigenized research methods, identifying grant funding opportunities, and presenting findings in conferences and publications.

The webinars will lead to the 2025 Health Sciences Summer Institute, a four-week program hosted jointly by AIHEC and the University of North Dakota’s Department of Indigenous Health to give tribal college and university students academic and professional development support for careers in the health sciences.

Earlier this year, AIHEC held a kick-off information session for the AIM-AHEAD Building an Academic Community of Practice in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning among tribal colleges and universities.

The guest speaker was Yvette Roubideaux, an adjunct professor at the Department of Health Systems, Management and Policy, Colorado School of Public Health.

The National Institutes of Health’s AIM-AHEAD program works to enhance the participation and representation of researchers and communities currently under-resourced in the development of AI and machine learning models and to improve the capabilities of this emerging technology, beginning with electronic health records (EHR) and extending to other data sets to address health inconsistencies.

The 2025 AIHEC Student Conference kicked off on March 8 and will run until March 11 in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The conference features workshops on various topics, including tribal college and university esports teams, career pathways in health careers, the value of a college degree, student retention, and practical applications of artificial intelligence (AI).

One specific workshop will address best practices for utilizing AI tools.

The conference also includes competitions in Critical Inquiry, Cyber Security, Science Bowl, scientific poster presentations, Traditional Plants and Herbs, and the NASA Unpiloted Robotic Vehicle.

The AIHEC Student Congress (ASC) will also hold a congress during the AIHEC Student Conference to promote leadership, self-governance, cultural preservation, educational achievement, and community development.

AIHEC reported that during National Tribal College Week, 35 out of 37 Tribal Colleges and Universities were represented this year at their 2025 Legislative Summit.
