Although COVID-19 disrupted commencement plans at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, graduation wasn’t canceled in May. One of the students who earned a degree from the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering was Kimberly Gottula.
According to Cal Poly Pomona, the magna cum laude in industrial engineering was named 2020 valedictorian. But that’s not all. Kimberly has landed a job at Lockheed Martin, the aerospace, defense, arms, security, and advanced technologies company.
On July 13, Kimberly will start a new job as a manufacturing planner. And she’s not alone. Cal Poly Pomona says she plans to relocate with her boyfriend, Michael Green, who also graduated in May and will work in systems engineering at Lockheed Martin.
“Lockheed is immensely lucky to have her,” Zoe Lance, a communications specialist with the university’s Office of Student Success, told Cal Poly Pomona. “She has the technical engineering skills, but she’s also a great communicator and collaborator.”
In 2016, Kimberly reportedly worked with the programming language Scratch through an MIT website. The research university in Cambridge, Massachusetts shared Kimberly’s interactive animation with others and she considers her game, Dress Up Stick Man, as a “true legacy.”
