Alum perspectives will broaden STEM experiences at UC Santa Cruz

POSTED ON Apr 10, 2024

STEM Diversity Programs at the University of California Santa Cruz are designed to support underrepresented students interested in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

These programs provide research experience, professional development, and inclusive community support.

Two new staff members have recently joined STEM Diversity Programs at UC Santa Cruz.

Steven Paniagua,  a first-generation Mexican-American and UC Santa Cruz alum, has been appointed graduate advisor.

He will lead the Peer Mentoring Coalition and provide best practices for mentorship programs to support STEM students.

As a student, he participated in STEM Diversity’s Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC), which provides research training to students competing for entry into graduate programs leading to a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences.

Paniagua continued his studies in the genetics of reading and language disorders, eventually earning his Ph.D. at Yale.

He was also the founding member of the first Connecticut chapter of the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

The second new staff member is Felix Perez, an indigenous Guatemalan Mayan and first-generation college graduate who earned a B.A. in psychology from UC Santa Cruz in 2019.

Perez has been appointed the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate program coordinator.

Perez will streamline daily operations in this role, support event planning, and enhance the office’s overall effectiveness and reach.
