Richard A. Tapia is among the few mathematicians to receive the Hispanic Heritage Award in Math and Science, as well as the National Medal of Science for his sustained efforts in promoting excellence in mathematics education.
In 2005, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) helped provide students with an enriched experience at the Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing.
At the upcoming AISES Conference, they aim to honor Indigenous excellence in math across various domains, from award-winning rugs to star knowledge, languages, and financial literacy.
Danny Luecke will present frameworks for Indigenous mathematics and engage participants in “notice and wonder” activities that focus on examples of Indigenous math, such as star knowledge and mathematical concepts embedded within Indigenous languages.
The AISES 2025 Rubric Overview will also be shared, which includes a methodology in action during the Student Research Presentation.
This presentation evaluates interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), engagement in STEM, STEM competencies and confidence, as well as future intentions to pursue STEM careers.
Indigenous students and educators will have the opportunity to learn about financial literacy during the conference’s Native Financial AISES adventure on October 1st and celebrate the brilliance of Native Americans in mathematics.
The AISES National Conference is focused on increasing Indigenous representation and celebrating it.
Students and faculty are encouraged to participate by submitting research presentations, volunteering at the conference, learning more about Native Financial Cents, reviewing the agenda for conference activities and sessions, and nominating a rising star in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) for the Walk of Fame.
Recently, AISES congratulated Lola Cody for receiving the Best of Class in Textiles Award at the 103rd Annual Santa Fe Indian Market. According to AISES, Cody’s exquisite rug serves as a remarkable reminder of Indigenous mastery in symmetry.
