Florida International University has revealed that a Fulbright doctoral student is revolutionizing agriculture in the state. The former chemistry professor from Uganda recently completed his Ph.D. in Earth Systems Science at FIU’s College of Arts, Sciences & Education.

His research applies artificial intelligence (AI) and nanotechnology to combat crop pests.

The new Ph.D. graduate intends to continue at FIU as a postdoctoral fellow. He has over 12 publications, a patent pending, and a strong dedication to mentoring.

In light of recent funding challenges, the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) has emphasized the importance of its Postdoc Leadership Institute (PLI).

This vital program empowers postdoctoral researchers to embrace leadership while maintaining cultural integrity and community values at its core.

However, programs like the PLI face risks due to funding issues, but support is crucial for their continuation, as they play an essential role in shaping the future of STEM leadership, one postdoc at a time. Tune in to hear the team discuss what makes the PLI unique and why support is needed now more than ever.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) has announced the launch of a new initiative called InternSHPE Prep this fall, aimed at guiding students through their career journeys.

SHPE is seeking mentors to assist students in securing their first significant job opportunities. The initiative will cover essential topics such as resume and LinkedIn tips, job search strategies, interview skills, and building networking confidence.

Additionally, the Hispanic Association for Colleges and Universities will host a webinar this month focused on effective virtual networking strategies.

The American Indian Society of Scientists and Engineers has announced the recipients of the 2025 AISES Professional Awards. Six remarkable individuals will be celebrated at the 2025 AISES National Conference, which will take place in Minneapolis, MN, in the fall.

This year’s honorees include Dr. Karina Walters (Professional of the Year), Dr. Kelsea Kanoho Hosoda (Blazing Flame Award), Robert Turner (Executive Excellence Award), Jennifer Randell (Indigenous Excellence Award), Dr. Cherie De Vore (Most Promising Engineer or Scientist), and Dr. Franklin Dollar (Technical Excellence Award).
