Starting in the spring of 2025, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) will launch a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence (AI). This program empowers students with the essential skills to successfully design, test, and successfully maintain groundbreaking AI systems.

According to the program’s website, students will gain vital expertise in AI, diving into machine learning, deep learning, and data-driven decision-making.

Graduates will develop a comprehensive understanding of AI’s technical prowess and ethical dimensions, ensuring they create technologies that uplift society while minimizing risks and biases.

But that’s not all! A UTEP master’s degree in AI echoes the same commitment to machine learning, deep learning, and data-driven methodologies.

Students enrolled in this master’s program will enjoy access to advanced research labs, where they’ll have the opportunity to engage in a wide array of projects—everything from harnessing computer vision for medical diagnoses to innovating AI-driven cybersecurity solutions and contributing to national defense applications, not to mention the exploration of large language models for creating conversational AI tailored to specific domains.

Dr. Salamah Salamah, the chair of UTEP’s Computer Science Department, shared that students will learn computer science skills while exploring applying AI in real-world scenarios and designing innovative AI techniques.

They’ll also delve into the important social and ethical implications these advancements bring.

Dr. Kenith Meissner, dean of the College of Engineering, highlighted that AI has been integral to UTEP’s research journey since the 1980s.

With the rapid evolution of generative AI technologies—like ChatGPT—students will benefit from a curriculum that adapts alongside these thrilling advancements, ensuring they remain at the forefront of this fast-moving field.

AI continues to enrich research across numerous disciplines, including biology, geology, additive manufacturing, and aerospace engineering, affirming its transformative potential.

As America’s leading Hispanic-serving university, 84% of UTEP’s 25,000 students identify as Hispanic, and more than half are the first in their families to attend college.

UTEP offers an inclusive educational experience with 170 degree programs, enhancing opportunities for all.
