A modern approach to cybersecurity education

This week, the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that it has invested nearly $15 million in four academic institutions to support cybersecurity scholarships. The recipients of these awards include grants from the CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, which aims to train the next generation of cybersecurity professionals and strengthen the workforce in government organizations.

“For nearly 25 years, the SFS program has been addressing the nation’s critical shortage of cybersecurity professionals,” said NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan in a press release.

“This next cohort will focus on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems security, next-generation wireless, and cybersecurity for smart manufacturing, among others,” continued Panchanathan. “They are poised to significantly contribute to our national and economic security. Their work will enhance the success of this important program and further strengthen the nation’s cybersecurity landscape.”

The NSF CyberCorps SFS program spans 43 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

It not only provides full scholarships and stipends to students but also promotes a modern approach to cybersecurity education.

Students who receive these scholarships commit to applying their expertise in federal, state, local, or tribal government cybersecurity roles after graduation.

Three of the four 2024 award recipients are new to the SFS program. The awardees and their projects are as follows:

  • Washington State University: CyberCorps Scholarship for Service: Developing the Next-Generation Cyber Workforce
  • Iowa State University: CyberCorps Scholarship for Service: Training Iowa’s Cyber Talents to Protect the Nation’s Critical Infrastructure
  • George Mason University: CyberCorps Scholarship for Service: EAGLE: Empowering American Government Leadership in Cybersecurity through Education
  • The Ohio State University: CyberCorps Scholarship for Service: The New Buckeye Scholarship for Service Program.
