TikTok has taken the world by storm with videos of people doing dances, stunts, pranks, and travel vlogs. You may be surprised to know that there is a STEM side of TikTok where creators perform experiments and post videos discussing various STEM topics.
The STEM side of TikTok consists of people in the STEM field showing their audience what being in STEM consists of. Some people use TikTok to inspire others to go into STEM by showing users what they do on a regular basis as a STEM student or professional.
Another trend on TikTok is women in STEM talking about how being a minority in the field affects them and how they alleviate some of these stressors. Women in these videos often try to prove that they are not just a “pretty face” by showing off their work as a STEM professional.
The TikTok account @institueofhumananatomy shows videos of real human cadavers for educational purposes. The user goes through various parts of the body and shows how different organs function and where exactly they can be found. This account currently has 9.3 million followers.
Another TikTok account dedicated to STEM is @astroathens. With over 265,000 followers, the owner of the account uses the platform for random facts, news, and stories about space.
Phillip Cook, the man behind the TikTok account @chemteacherphil, uses the platform to perform various chemistry experiments. In one video, he demonstrates why water is not the best option when putting out a car fire. He explains that cars contain magnesium and when this element is mixed with water, it creates a violent reaction that can potentially make the fire worse.
So, the next time you are aimlessly scrolling through TikTok, check out some of these creators. You will not be disappointed with all the experiments and interesting facts you can find on the platform.
