Students at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) are encouraged to register by March 18 for HACU’s Capitol Forum on Hispanic Higher Education in Washington, D.C. April 1-2. The 24th annual forum on Hispanic higher education will include sessions such as “Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Vital to Increasing Latinos in STEM Fields,” convened by Beatriz T. Espinoza, president, Coastal Bend College.
HSI program priorities at Coastal Bend include increasing the number of Hispanics and other low-income students obtaining degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields; and developing a model transfer between two-year HSI’s and four-year institutions working to provide access to Hispanic and other underrepresented groups in STEM majors.
One workshop held prior to the forum will focus on “Funding Opportunities for HSIs,” presented by Talitha Washington (photo above), program director, Improving Undergraduate STEM Education: Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI Program), National Science Foundation.
Forum panelists are regent professors, education specialists and academic administrators from New Mexico State University, U.S. Department of Education, and Northeastern Illinois University, and HSI students.
The “Hispanic Demographics in the 116th Congress and 2020 Census” workshop will feature Ana Gonzalez-Barrera, senior researcher, Pew Research Center; and a reception honoring the champions of Hispanic Higher Education in Congress. Participants will include leadership from the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) leadership.
