2021 National Hispanic Heritage Month

POSTED ON Sep 06, 2021

Earlier this year, the National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers announced “Esperanza: A Celebration of Hispanic Heritage and Hope” as the 2021 Hispanic Heritage Month observance theme.

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the contributions and importance of Hispanics and Latinos to the United States and those American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America.

The National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers supports the federal government’s observance activities each year by leading the process to select the annual theme federal agencies will use to conduct their Hispanic Heritage Month observances.

California State University-Long Beach (CSULB), which was recently ranked a national leader in the number of degrees awarded to Hispanic students by Hispanic Outlook on Education magazine, has announced a full schedule of events for its Latinx Heritage Month Celebration.

Bienvenida, the welcome event for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) students at CSULB is hosted annually by the College of Engineering, College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and other partners to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month and Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI) Week.

Other events slated at CSULB include the HSI Caminos Project, a program aimed at increasing Hispanic students in the teaching profession; Exploring LatinX Identity within the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), and a Latino families program presented by the Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation, and Leadership Training and the Department of Health Science.

The Latinx Cultural Welcome event will be held Thursday, Sept. 16, and led by the Dean of Students, Student Life and Development, Student Orientation, Advising & Registration, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.

Innovation Hour and Latinx Entrepreneurship will take place Thursday, Sept 23 with The Institute for Innovation + Entrepreneurship. Later the same day, Latinas: Quienes Somos will be presented by Student Life and Development & Counseling and Psychological Services. On Friday, the Women’s Collective will present the Rising Speaker Series.

Counseling and Psychological Services will host Honoring Cultural Grief and Loss Practices in a Virtual Platica on Wednesday, Sept. 29. A Virtual Open House will be held the next day.
