On July 13th, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley welcomed a team from Los Alamos National Laboratory to create more opportunities for students.

Dr. Hiram Moya, UTRGV’s associate professor of Manufacturing and Industrial Engineering, organized the visit to strengthen research and workforce development initiatives, and provide internships for UTRGV students.

During the visit, Dr. Moya emphasized the potential of UTRGV’s engineering program to support LANL’s activities, such as producing national security-sensitive items.

A collaboration between LANL and UTRGV would benefit both parties, as it would prepare UTRGV engineers to work for the national lab and foster the development of UTRGV as a trusted partner capable of researching to support LANL’s primary mission of providing scientific and engineering capabilities for federal security programs.

The Air Force Research Laboratory has granted $5.3 million to University of Texas El Paso Aerospace Center’s Digital Engineering Aerospace and Defense Systems Design Centers in El Paso, Huntsville, Alabama, and Youngstown, Ohio.

The program will use an immersive learning approach to provide pre-professional experiences to 200 engineering and technology students.

The DEDCs will also offer a course in the principles of digital engineering to enhance the knowledge of participants from various sectors.

This project aims to prepare the next generation of engineers for the U.S. aerospace and defense manufacturing sectors while substantially decreasing the costs associated with long-term system maintenance.

The UTEP Career Center has invited interested parties to connect with bilingual and bicultural students at the Career EXPO on Sept. 21 and 22 at the Don Haskins Center, where UTEP students will showcase their readiness for careers in engineering, science, and other fields.
