Mercy College recently received a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Promoting Postbaccalaureate Opportunities for Hispanic Americans Program.
The grant is for a five-year project called Graduate Professional Resources and Opportunities (GRAD-PRO).
The project aims to support underrepresented graduate and professional students, particularly the Hispanic students the College serves.
Mercy’s student body consists of 41% Hispanic, 23% Black, 22% White, 6% Asian, and 2% two or more races.
In recognition of its efforts to serve Latino students, Excelencia in Education awarded Mercy the Seal of Excelencia in 2022. Mercy is the first Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in New York State to receive this certification.
Mercy is celebrating its 25th year as an HSI. From September 11 to 17, the university will be participating in the recognition of Hispanic-Serving Institutions Week along with HSIs across the country.
This week falls within Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15.
As a part of the celebration, Mercy will host a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on the evening of Thursday, October 12.
The HSI Week Committee aims to raise awareness of the campus resources, departments, and centers that provide support and culturally enriching experiences.
They also want to highlight the creative work, achievements, and activism of their diverse community, prioritize students, and ensure that service at Mercy University is intentional.
On August 24, the University of Texas at El Paso began its Fall 2023 semester with Move-In Day for students residing in the university’s residential facilities.
The university organized various activities to encourage student engagement and promote the use of on-campus resources.
The festivities will culminate with the 33rd annual Minerpalooza on September 15. The event will feature a diverse musical lineup, interactive activities, food vendors, and Pete’s Playground, which is a dedicated play area for children.
On the same day, California State University, Chico, which has been an HSI since 2015, will hold an introductory session to raise awareness about the history and significance of these institutions.
The session aims to educate individuals about HSIs and how they make a difference in students’ lives.
